Faith UMC Update March 8, 2018

Dear Friends in Faith, Happy snowy day!  It’s not quite as snowy as we expected, but it reminds us that winter isn’t done with us yet!  The good thing, though, is that March snows don’t last very long.  Soon it will melt and we will enter Mud Season Lent often corresponds with Mud Season, which seems appropriate.  Mud Season is messy and Lent can be messy, too.  As we pray and reflect on our lives we sometimes get stuck in those areas of our lives we wish we could change, or discover things we wish we could wipe off, like mud on our boots.  Below you will find a reflection that invites us not to dwell on our mistakes, but move forward with hope Scroll further down to learn what’s happening in your Faith community.   Your Friend in Faith, Pastor Kristabeth   So let us feast on simple pleasures, and fast from all that gets our bodies and souls out of balance. Let us feast on kindness, and fast from sarcasm. Let us feast on compassion, and fast from holding grudges. Let us feast on patience, and fast from anxiety. Let us feast on peace, and fast from stirring up needless conflict. Let us feast on acceptance, and fast from judgment. Let us feast on joy, and fast from jealousy. Let us feast on faith, and fast from fear. Let us feast on creativity, and fast from all that deadens our souls. Let us feast on social justice, and let us fast from negligence of the most vulnerable. Let us feast on service to others, and fast from selfishness. Let us feast on delight, and fast from despair. Let us feast on bread and wine in spiritual communion, and fast from all that keeps us from communing deeply with each other and with God. So that our lives might be sufficient, fulfilled, complete, whole, enough. Amen! ~ Rev. Faith UMC Update March 2, 2018

Dear Friends in Faith, During this Season of Lent our worship series is focused on grace. So far we have explored Grace for our Brokenness and Grace for our Weakness. This Sunday we will consider Grace for Foolishness. While Lent is a season for considering our failings, it is also a season to give thanks for God’s grace. Without God’s grace we could never overcome our human frailty. Thankfully God’s grace is an undeserved gift, and not something that we have to earn. Last Sunday I experienced God’s grace through you when you forgave me for a rather unwise hymn choice! During Lent we put away our “Alleluia” so it will be special on Easter morning. Yet, for last Sunday’s closing hymn I chose one with several “Alleluias” PER VERSE! We were able to laugh and change our hymn mid-course. While I was embarrassed at the time, I see it now as a wonderful lesson in the meaning of Lent – recognizing our failings and changing course. Thanks be to God! Below you will find a prayer reflection by St. Augustine of Hippo. Scroll further down to learn what’s happening in your Faith community. Your Friend in Faith, Pastor Kristabeth   O Lord, The house of my soul is narrow; enlarge it that you may enter in. It is ruinous, O repair it! It displeases Your sight. I confess it, I know. But who shall cleanse it, to whom shall I cry but to you? Cleanse me from my secret faults, O Lord, and spare Your servant from strange sins. ~ St. Augustine of Hippo (AD 354-430)   Sunday, March 4 – Third Sunday of Lent Theme:  Grace for our Foolishness Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 Sermon:  “Who Are Those Fools?” Family Sunday and Holy Communion   What is Family Sunday? This coming Sunday is the first Sunday of the month and “Family Sunday.”  Family Sunday is an opportunity for families to worship together – children and adults!  Family Sundays generally occur on the first Sunday of the month (with a couple of exceptions).  There will be no FLOCK classes on Sunday and the service is designed with children in mind.  This will give our younger folks the opportunity to become familiar with the worship service and receive communion.   Pastor Kristabeth’s Schedule March 5-9 Monday – Office in the Morning, Afternoon Visits Tuesday – Office in the Morning, Lunch Meeting, Afternoon Visits and Meetings Wednesday – Tending the Fire Class in Montpelier, Visit, Tending Faith 7pm Thursday – Office in the Morning, Afternoon Visits and Meeting Friday – Pastor’s Day Off   Celebrate 124 pounds of food delivered to the Food Shelf for February!   New Member Conversations – Starting THIS SUNDAY March 4 Come join the new member conversations! The first class will be after worship on March 4. Other classes will be after worship on some Sundays in April. Come if you are curious – You can decide to join – or not – as classes proceed.   Tending Faith ~ Wednesday, March 7 at 7pm – Leadership Empowerment and Development Our next “Tending Faith” will be Wednesday, March 7 at 7pm in the Upper Elementary room. Tending Faith is a gathering for current church leaders and those who are discerning a call to leadership in the church. All are welcome! It is an opportunity to come together for reflection, leadership discussion, tool-building, and prayer in a one-hour format. Speak with Pastor Kristabeth for more information. Also, mark your calendars for April 4 and May 2 for upcoming Tending Faith gatherings.   To All Knitters and Crochets’ –...

Dear Friends in Faith, Lent is living up to its name this year!  The meaning of Lent is Spring or lengthening of days.  Yesterday, with the temperatures in the high sixties, it certainly felt like Spring!  This morning, though, temperatures were back down in the 20s.  Winter isn’t over yet! Life is sometimes like the wild fluctuations in the weather.  At one moment all is going well, but the next moment we face an unexpected challenge.  Like Lent, life is a journey of ups and downs.  Yet in life, like in Lent, we can take comfort that the Risen Christ meets us at the end of the journey.  Just like we know that Spring will come, knowing that Christ is with us can make the fluctuations easier to bear. Below you will find a reflection on the Season of Lent.  Scroll further down to learn what’s happening in your Faith community. Your Friend in Faith, Pastor Kristabeth Do you want to fast this Lent? Fast from hurting words and say kind words; Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude; Fast from anger and be filled with patience; Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope; Fast from worries and have trust in God; Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity; Fast from pressures and be prayerful; Fast from bitterness and fill your hearts with joy; Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others; Fast from grudges and be reconciled; Fast from words and be silent so you can listen. ~ Words of Pope Francis shared by Tricia from the Conference Board of Laity   Sunday, February 25 – Second Sunday of Lent Theme:  Grace for our Weakness Scripture: Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 Sermon:  “Embracing our Name”   Pastor Kristabeth’s Schedule February 26-March 2 Monday – Office in the Morning, Afternoon Visits Tuesday – Working in the Community and Visits Wednesday – Office in the Morning, Trustees Meeting 7pm Thursday – Office in the Morning, Afternoon Visits Friday – Pastor’s Day Off   High School FLOCK to meet at Denny’s February 25 The February 25 High School Sunday School class will be held at Denny’s Restaurant on Shelburne Rd. from 9:30 to 10:30 AM.  Discussion will focus around the Lasagna Luncheon on Palm Sunday (March 25), and the “Future Trees for Faith” project culminating on Sunday, April 22, which is Earth Day.   New Member Conversations – Starting March 4 Come join the new member conversations! The first class will be after worship on March 4. Other classes will be after worship on some Sundays in April. Come if you are curious – You can decide to join – or not – as classes proceed.   To All Knitters and Crochets’ – A Message from Bonnie Machia Fred Sanford gave me Gail’s yarn, needles, and pattern books.  There is a lot of all! I am thinking it would be a nice memorial to Gail if the yarn is used to make hats, scarves and mittens for the 2018 mitten tree at church.  There is way too much for me to use it all, so I would like to start a knitting/crochet group. We can meet monthly or weekly, needles and yarn will be provided. I have tried several of the many patterns that are simple, so any level of knitting ability is welcome.  If you are interested, please be in contact: marilynmachia@comcast.net  (put “knitting” in the subject line) or call 802-863-3557.  Let me know time of day and days of the week that work for you.   Faith United Methodist Women Meeting – SUNDAY, MARCH 11TH There will be a meeting after worship...

Faith UMC Update: February 15, 2018

Dear Friends in Faith, Lent is now upon us, the season of reflection and repentance. Often during Lent, Christians give up something (chocolate, coffee) as a way to acknowledge our dependence on God. When we crave the thing we gave up we are to think of God and thank God for all that God has given us. This is one form of a Lenten fast. Another Lenten discipline involves taking something on – whether it is service in the community, writing letters to friends in need, or donating to a worthy cause. In this form of Lenten discipline, we give thanks to God for the ability to do that thing we have taken on for Lent. Whatever you are doing to acknowledge it, I wish you a blessed Lent. May you be open to God’s working in your heart to bring about transformation. Below you will find a prayer for the beginning of Lent. Further down are announcements about church events and opportunities. Your Friend in Faith, Pastor Kristabeth   Remind us often Lord, when we are feeling proud, arrogant, beyond reproach, pleased with ourselves, self sufficient in our ways, that for such as us and better and worse you walked a road that took you to a cruel cross, and rose again to show us where we might look for rescue as from this lofty perch we fall. ~ Faith and Worship   Sunday, February 18 – First Sunday of Lent Theme:  Grace for our Brokenness Scripture: Genesis 9:8-17, Mark 1:9-15 Sermon:  “Jesus’ Pop-Quiz” Compassion Circle offering a Mission Moment for JUMP   Pastor Kristabeth’s Schedule February 19-23 Monday – Office Closed for President’s Day Tuesday – Office in the Morning, Lunch Meeting Wednesday – Office 10am-1pm, Afternoon Visit, Worship at Gazebo Senior Living Thursday – Office 10am-1pm, Afternoon Visits Friday – Pastor’s Day Off   New Member Conversations You might be wondering about our church history or how Faith UMC plans for the future. Who decides what we’ll do next week, next month, next year? What does membership mean? How can I become more involved? What are my spiritual gifts? Who was John Wesley and why is he important to Methodists? If you’d like some answers – let Tricia Waldron know you are interested by seeing her at church or calling 373-6114 or via email twvt78@gmail.com.   Faith United Methodist Women Meeting – SUNDAY, MARCH 11TH There will be a meeting after worship on March 11th for anyone interested in having a bazaar this year. We need to decide whether to continue or explore other fundraising opportunities. Dear Friends in Faith,   This has been a week of tragedy and tears as we’ve reeled from the violence in Las Vegas.  The enormity of the tragedy is hard to comprehend – dozens killed, hundreds wounded.  We lift our prayers of lament and petition to God who weeps with us.  My faith was buoyed by stories of local United Methodist Churches that reached out with compassion and a helping hand.  You can read one such story here:  http://www.umc.org/news-and-media/after-mass-shooting-churchgoers-offer-help   Let us pray for the grieving, the wounded, the traumatized.  And let us work and pray for a world of peace and love, a world without violence and hate.  Below us a prayer we can lift in the face of the tragedy.  Further down you can read news of happenings in our church and local community.   Your Friend in Faith, Pastor Kristabeth   Lord God, we don’t know how to pray. This immense tragendy feels overwhelming. We can only imagine how the victims feel, and we are so many miles away that we feel helpless. Surround those directly involved with your loving presence. Comfort the families of the dead and injured, Sustain those waiting for word of those they love. Protect, strengthen, and uphold the rescuers and emergency personnel. Help all of us to remember that your love is bigger and stronger than despair and destruction. Guide and strengthen us to reach out to those affected in ways that will bring healing. Give them and us a sense of your peace and hope. In the name of Jesus, our friend and healer. Amen.   ~ Adapted from Prayers for Life’s Ordinary and Extraordinary Moments   Pastor Kristabeth’s Schedule and Office Hours Week of October 8-14 (Schedule may change as visitation needs and other pressing matters arise.) Each annual conference will take one week to have intentional prayer for the mission of The United Methodist Church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world and for the work of the Commission on a Way Forward. The Commission on a Way Forward was proposed by the Council of Bishops and approved by the 2016 General Conference to do a complete examination and possible revision the Book of Discipline paragraphs concerning human sexuality and explore maintaining and strengthening the unity of the church.  Prayers written by United Methodists in New England will be shared our website www. neumc.org.
