Faith UMC Update April 26, 2018

Dear Friends in Faith,

Many people are familiar with what has come to be known as The Serenity Prayer, written by Reinhold Niebuhr.  It states simply and powerfully, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.” One of the takeaways from our Adult Study class on “The Anatomy of Peace” is that, as much as we try, we often cannot change other people.  The only person we can truly change is ourself.  Below is another take on the Serenity Prayer, which affirms just that.

If you scroll down further you will find announcements about events and opportunities in your church and community. Attached is our May Horizons of Faith.

Your Friend in Faith,

Pastor Kristabeth

Source of Good;

grant me the serenity

to accept

that I cannot change other people;

the courage

to change myself;

and the wisdom

to appreciate differences

~ Richard Holdsworth, Progressive Christianity

Ham Dinner and Silent Auction – Saturday, May 5 – Buy Your Tickets Sunday!

On Saturday, May 5, our church will hold its annual Ham Dinner and Silent Auction. This is our church’s largest fund raising event with all proceeds going towards our operating budget. We need many volunteers. The volunteer sign-up sheets are on the kiosk. Diane Chamberlain is managing the kitchen and kitchen help. Valerie Kuentzel is in charge of the Silent Auction portion. Please contact either of these coordinators with questions or to volunteer. Purchase your tickets and invited your friends!   See you on Cinco de Mayo, in English: May 5!

Future Trees for Faith Project
Faith UMC Youth and the UVM Forestry Club will soon culminate a cooperative effort to replace the maple trees which have died within the past few years with some new oak trees.  Young Spencer Baker and Tim Hess are organizing this effort for Faith.  The youth of the church are being asked to help dig holes where 4 new trees will be planted after worship on May 6.  Since the whole project is too big to carry out on a Sunday, a sign-up has been placed on the kiosk in the narthex to form teams that will dig the holes during the afternoon (after school) on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday (May 2, 3 and 4).  Please join in this stewardship effort!

Compassion Team Message:  Let Us Help Them

In Vermont we have hundred’s of children placed into foster care each year. Which is why the Compassion Team will be encouraging you to learn more about PINS (Partners in Service) – faith communities and human service agencies collaborating to help local children and families in need. We will be kicking off a number of PINS-related programs over the next couple of months:

1) Providing desserts for ~100 people attending the annual Foster/Kin and Adoptive Families Celebration on May 12th. Please mark your baking calendars – we’re looking for fun, kid-friendly desserts to be delivered to FUMC on 5/11 and 5/12. Let’s make this year special for the kids and their families!
2) Clothes Line for Kids – a care package of new clothes for children entering the foster program. More details coming in next month’s newsletter.
3) Mission Moment and Meet & Greet with Cathy Frost, Resource Coordinator for Burlington Department for Children and Families Sunday, May 6.  Learn more about how you can support PINS, foster families, and other volunteer opportunities.
