Faith UMC Update May 2, 2018

Dear Friends in Faith,

Last Sunday was a joy-filled day, as we affirmed Tim Riddle as a Ministry Candidate in the United Methodist Church.  Tim led us in a meaningful worship service and shared his call story.  I give thanks for Tim, Emilie and Gryphon and encourage us all to pray for them as they prepare to move to North Carolina so Tim can attend Duke Divinity School.

In his sermon, Tim reminded us that we are all called by God. God’s call extends beyond the church out into the world.  As one who was called to work in the church for 18 years, and is now being called to a new vocation, I know God can call us to many different things throughout our lives.  God calls us to share God’s love in our neighborhoods, schools, families and work places.  What has God called you to do this year, this week, this month, today?

Below you will find a prayer reflection on God’s call.  If you scroll down further you will find announcements about events and opportunities in your church community.

Your Friend in Faith,

Pastor Kristabeth

We have a call!
To be loved
and to love.
To be shown mercy
and to show mercy.
To be forgiven
and to forgive.
To receive hope
and to offer hope .
To know joy
and share joy.
To feel peace
and bring peace.
To be made whole
and offer wholeness.
We have a call
Do you hear?

Future Trees for Faith to be Planted on Sunday!

Faith UMC Youth and UVM Forestry Club students will be planting trees for our Future Trees for Faith project.  The purpose of this project is to plant new trees to replace the several maple trees we have lost over the pastor few years.  These new trees will bless our congregation for generations to come!  If you are helping with the tree planting on Sunday please bring (or wear) old clothes!

Rev. Leigh Goodrich to be Pastor of Faith UMC starting July 1

Bishop Sudarshana Devadhar intends to appoint Leigh Goodrich as pastor of the Faith United Methodist Church, South Burlington effective July 1, 2018 subject to fulfilling all of the requirements needed for a successful transition by the pastor and the respective churches affected by the appointment. The appointment will be finalized at the 2018 Annual Conference Session of the New England Conference.  Let us pray for Pastor Leigh and her husband, Gregory, during this time of transition.

April was our month to collect JUMP Bags.  If you forgot to bring your bag in during the month of April, Bill Eddy will be glad to deliver any stragglers.  Just leave them in front of the Compassion Table in the Narthex.

Pastor Kristabeth’s Last Sunday June 10 – Available for Pastoral Emergencies through June 30

In the United Methodist tradition, there are clear guidelines for how former pastors are to relate to the churches they once served.  The general rule is that the pastor is to have no contact with former parishioners for at least one year.  The purpose of this rule is to allow the church and new pastor to build a strong relationship.  With this in mind, after July 1 I will not respond to e-mail or accept phone calls, visit, attend funerals, or be present at church functions.  Additionally, those who are my “Facebook Friends” will be moved to a restricted list, so we will not see each other’s posts. In my personal experience, I have seen the difficulty that arises when a former pastor maintains relationships in the congregation and how that interferes with the ministry of the new pastor.  While it may seem to some a harsh standard, keeping my distance in all circumstances is a way that I can support and show respect for the congregation of Faith UMC and your new pastor, Rev. Leigh Goodrich.   ~ Your Friend in Faith, Pastor Kristabeth

Compassion Team Message:  Let Us Help Them

In Vermont we have hundred’s of children placed into foster care each year. Which is why the Compassion Team will be encouraging you to learn more about PINS (Partners in Service) – faith communities and human service agencies collaborating to help local children and families in need. We will be kicking off a number of PINS-related programs over the next couple of months:

1) Providing desserts for ~100 people attending the annual Foster/Kin and Adoptive Families Celebration on May 12th. Please mark your baking calendars – we’re looking for fun, kid-friendly desserts to be delivered to FUMC on 5/11 and 5/12. Let’s make this year special for the kids and their families!
2) Clothes Line for Kids – a care package of new clothes for children entering the foster program. More details coming in next month’s newsletter.
3) Mission Moment and Meet & Greet with Cathy Frost, Resource Coordinator for Burlington Department for Children and Families Sunday, May 6.  Learn more about how you can support PINS, foster families, and other volunteer opportunities.
