Faith UMC Update May 23, 2018

Dear Friends in Faith,

When I was a child I would often join my parents or grandparents at the cemetery on Memorial Day to decorate the graves of loved ones who had died. Some of the graves we visited were of loved ones I had never met – a great-uncle who died in World War II, my mother’s brother who died in his twenties. Even though I never met these people, I understood the solemnity of the day. Originally Memorial Day was known as “Decoration Day,” and was a day to honor the Union dead after the Civil War. Following World War I it became a day for remembering all those who had died in our nation’s wars. And from there it has broadened further, so that now Memorial Day is for remembering all who have died.

Below you will find a Memorial Day prayer. If you scroll down further you will find announcements about events and opportunities in your church community.

Your Friend in Faith,

Pastor Kristabeth

Our Holy and Gracious God, help us to remember. Help us to remember the sacrifices bravely made in which one has given life for another and for all. Help us to remember those that stand in the breach where there is trouble and in which conflict threatens to undo your good creation.

Help us to remember that we look for the day when every sword will be replaced by a plow, that all may be fed and live in your peace. Forgive us every sin that makes for division and for war, and bring us all into your kingdom on earth as in heaven. This we pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Any who would like to meet me at the church at 9 AM on Saturday morning, or who can stay after the church worship service on Sunday morning, are welcome.  All are welcome to participate, but most especially the youth.

FLOCK, our Children’s Church School, will be on summer break from June 10th through the beginning of September. Children of all ages are welcome (and encouraged) to attend worship with their families.  Coloring pages are available at the Children’s Table at the front of the Sanctuary.  The nursery will continue to be staffed throughout the summer (except on the First Sunday of the month).

On Sunday you will find a “Free Book” table in the Gathering Space. There are many Bibles, books on various topics, and Bible cases for you to peruse. Please do not be shy! If you are looking for a Bible of a particular translation, or you have a friend who would like a Bible, or find a book of particular interest, please take what you can use! All the books and Bibles were donated for use by our Faith community.
