Faith UMC Update Wednesday, September 16

Posted by on Sep 16, 2015 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update Wednesday, September 16

Dear Friends in Faith,

Last Sunday we had a great kick-off to our FLOCK year.  It was wonderful to see so many children (and adults) gathered, together again after a busy summer!  And the pot-luck food we shared was, as usual, fabulous!  This Sunday we continue the celebration as we present Bibles to our youngest ones, along with those in the 3rd and 8th grades.  If you, as an adult, don’t have a Bible please speak with me and I will make sure you get one.  If you have your Bible handy each week you can look up the Scripture lessons for Sunday’s worship, which I include in our Update ~ just scroll down!

Below you will find a prayer celebrating God’s presence with us.  Scroll further down to find out what is happening in your Faith community!

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Kristabeth

From our rising in the morning
to our lying down again,

you are with us

every hour of the day,

our reassurance

when storms assail

and strength

when courage fails.

From our rising in the morning

to our lying down again,

your light illumines

every step of the way,

our comfort

when darkness falls

and peace

that calms our souls.

From our rising in the morning

to our lying down again,

you are with us. Amen.

Faith UMC Update April 2

Dear Friends in Faith,

It has bee a long winter and a long Lent.  But we aren’t quite “there” yet.  Even as we have snow in the forecast, we have to travel with Jesus to the cross.  Spring will come.  Easter will come.  Yet in our rush to get “there” let’s not miss the lessons we can learn along the journey.

Below you will find a prayer for Holy Week.  Scroll further down to read about our upcoming Holy Week opportunities and other events.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Krista Beth

The Love of Jesus

This is love.
Not that you spoke words of comfort,
walked with the unclean and unloved,
shared wisdom, bread and wine,
brought healing into lives
and challenged the status quo.

This is love.
That you spoke the word of God,
walked a painful road to the Cross,
shared living water, bread of life,
brought Salvation to the world
and died for the sake of all.

This is love.
It is a seed
sown in the ground,
which germinates,
blossoms,
and spreads its sweet perfume.

Dear Friends in Faith,

The end of Lent is within sight.  Palm Sunday is just around the corner and soon it will be Easter morning.  Yet we still have time to prepare ~ heart and soul ~ to meet Jesus on the cross and at the empty tomb.  Christ came not just for some, but for all.  Christ expanded the boundaries so all could be sons and daughters of God.  That includes you and me.  Thanks be to God!

Below you will find a Lenten prayer.  Scroll down further to find information about upcoming events and activities in our church and wider community.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Krista Beth

Remind us often Lord,
when we are feeling
proud,
arrogant,
beyond reproach,
pleased with ourselves,
self sufficient in our ways,
that for such as us
and better
and worse
you walked a road
that took you to a cruel cross,
and rose again to show us where
we might look for rescue
as from this lofty perch
we fall. Amen.

Faith UMC Update March 11

Dear Friends in Faith,

Sharing our faith is sometimes a difficult thing to do.  Recently there was a short video on Facebook about one pastor’s answer to the question, “What do you do?”  He answered, “I work for a global and intergalactic enterprise.”  That’s one way to put it!  It’s true that, in certain groups, it can be uncomfortable to say, “I am a Christian” or “I go to church.”  Yet Lent is a time to challenge ourselves with new insights and new practices.  Maybe this week, the fourth week of Lent, we could share our faith with someone ~ a friend, a colleague, a neighbor ~ and tell them about this global and intergalactic adventure that is faith.

Below you will find information about upcoming events and activities in our church and wider community.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Krista Beth

Lord, grant us simplicity of faith

and a generosity of service

that gives without counting cost.

A life overflowing with Grace

poured out from the One

who gave everything,
that we might show

the power of love

to a broken world,

and share the truth

from a living Word.

Lord, grant us simplicity of faith,

and a yearning to share it.  Amen.

Faith UMC Update March 5

Dear Friends in Faith,

If you count the days between Ash Wednesday and Easter you will find that they add up to more than 40 days.  Yet we speak of Lent as being a 40 day journey.  This is because every Sunday is a “little Easter.”  The Sundays in Lent don’t count!  So if you gave up chocolate or soda or coffee for Lent you can enjoy them on Sundays and not break your Lenten fast :)

More importantly, though, every Sunday ~ even during the somber season of Lent ~ we celebrate God’s love for us through his son, Jesus.  Below you will find a prayer lifting up that love.  And please scroll down further to read about the upcoming activities of our Faith family and community.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Krista Beth

Inscribed upon our heart,
the maker’s mark,
indelible,
the Word of God,
‘Love’
beautifully written,
heartfelt,
that all God’s people
might know
that we are precious,
children
of a heavenly Father
becoming family together,
and may eyes lift upward
as we listen together
to hear angels worship. Amen

Faith UMC Update February 26

Posted by on Feb 26, 2015 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update February 26

Dear Friends in Faith,

I’ve heard Lent described as a ‘heavy’ time of year.  During Lent we contemplate some weighty things ~ like sin, temptation, arrogance and greed.  We remember how Jesus entered the wilderness and how, in the days before his death, he traveled the road to Jerusalem with his disciples.  Yet, the truth is, we must travel these difficult roads to get to the joy of the resurrection.  As the prayer below reminds us, our sin is no match for God’s grace.  This is the hope we hold on to during Lent.

And please scroll down further to read about the upcoming activities of our Faith family and community.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Krista Beth

Your Word reveals to us a simple truth,
that sin entered this world
through human folly
in believing we could be like you,
and permeated history
through envy, selfishness and greed.
Yet sin, which holds us tight
within its grasp
cannot resist a heart that is touched
by your grace through Jesus Christ,
cannot contend with Living Water
pouring into hearts and souls.
Your Word reveals to us a simple truth,
that sin is defeated
and we can become
the people we were always meant to be,
by your grace through Jesus Christ. Amen.

When is Easter?
Lately I’ve fielded a few questions about how we figure out the day of Easter.  Easter is what Christians call a “moveable feast,” meaning the date changes year to year.  The details of the exact calculation of the Easter date slip my mind, so I did some research and this is what I found:

“Easter is the Sunday following the paschal full moon, which is the full moon that falls on or after the vernal (spring) equinox. We know that Easter must always occur on a Sunday, because Sunday was the day of Christ’s Resurrection. But why the paschal full moon? Because that was the date of Passover in the Jewish calendar, and the Last Supper occurred on the Passover.  The Church does not use the exact date of the paschal full moon but an approximation, because the paschal full moon can fall on different days in different time zones, which would mean that the date of Easter would be different depending on which time zone you live in. For calculation purposes, the full moon is always set at the 14th day of the lunar month (the lunar month begins with the new moon).”  ~ AboutReligion.com

Faith UMC Update February 19

Posted by on Feb 19, 2015 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update February 19

Dear Friends in Faith,

This week we enter the Season of Lent.  Maybe some of you are giving something up for Lent.  Others may be taking on a spiritual practice, such as daily prayer or exercise.  These disciplines not only may improve our lives and health, but help us draw closer to God.  By taking up a spiritual practice during Lent we acknowledge God’s place in our lives.

As you consider how you might recognize God this Lenten Season, remember that no matter what you do God is with you to help you along the journey.  Below you will find a prayer for this season.  Please scroll down further to read about the upcoming activities of our Faith family and community.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Krista Beth

Lord,
let everything I do this day and in this season of Lent
come from you, be inspired by you.
I long to be closer to you.
Help me to remember that nothing is important in my life
unless it glorifies you in some way.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the day to day of my life and keep saying,
”Tomorrow, I will spend more time in prayer,”

but now my longing meets your love and I want to do it now.
Help me to rely on you for help.
Heal me, Lord, and help me to find you in the darkness of my life.

Let me reach out in this darkness and feel your hand and love there to guide me.  Amen.

Faith UMC Update February 13

Dear Friends in Faith,

I don’t know about you, but for me these cold temperatures have me longing for Spring.  The green grass and flowers are buried under the snow and it doesn’t seem like anything could survive in this frigid weather.  Luck for us, Spring is coming…. or rather the Season of Lent starts next Wednesday.  Lent is a time of preparation for Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.  During Lent all may seem dead, but there is new life at the end.  Lent literally means Spring.

Below you will find a prayer reflection on Lent as we prepare to enter this Holy Season.  And please scroll down further to read about the upcoming activities of our Faith family and community.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Krista Beth

The season of Lent calls us to journey along the edge, to anticipate that final trip to Jerusalem. Lent call us to the cutting edge, when the wheat falls to the ground and new life comes forth. Lent not only calls us to give up something, but also invites us to participate in the mystery of God-with-us. By your grace, call us from grief into gladness, despair into hope, estrangement into right relations with each other and with earth.  Amen.

Outreach to Fairpoint Strikers ~ Next Tuesday at 1pm
Local clergy and churches are reaching out to the Fairpoint strikers by visiting them at the picket line on 800 Hinesburg Rd. and bringing coffee and donuts or other snacks.  I signed up to visit next Tuesday at 1pm and would love to have anyone interested join me.  I plan to pick up a ‘box of joe’ and a dozen donuts to share.  These individuals (and their families) have experienced great hardship these past few months.  A warm cup of coffee on a cold day and a smile may help to lift their spirits.  The visit won’t be long, as I have to be back at church by 1:30pm.  Please let me know if you are interested!  ~ Pastor Krista Beth

Staff Parish Relations Team Update
It’s been a busy time for your Staff Parish Relations Team.  Along with the staff we added over the last few months, we have also found an excellent handy man to become our new sexton.  After only one week, Ryan Butler already has a list of spare time fixes.  Keep the SPRT in your prayers as we encourage all of our staff to be the best they can be in their ministry at Faith. Faith UMC Update January 22

Dear Friends in Faith,

Last Sunday we heard the witness of Betsy Hardy and Rev. Dick Hibbert as they shared their concern for the environment and the work of Vermont Interfaith Power and Light.  They both expressed eloquently the connection between faith and care for the environment.  As God’s people we are stewards of all that God has given us, including the gifts of creation.

Below you will find a prayer to our God, the Creator of the Universe.  And please scroll down further to read about the upcoming activities of our Faith community.

Your Friend in Faith,

Pastor Krista Beth

Today, Creator of the Universe, we ask that you open our heart and open our eyes so we can enjoy all of your creations and live in eternal love with you. Help us to see you in everything we perceive with our eyes, with our ears, with our heart, with all our senses. Let us perceive with eyes of love so that we find you wherever we go and see you in everything you create. Let us see you in every cell of our body, in every emotion of our mind, in every dream, in every flower, in every person we meet. You cannot hide from us because you are everywhere, and we are one with you. Let us be aware of this truth. Amen.

~ Don Miguel Ruiz

Sunday Evening Adult Study ~ The Book of Esther:  Holy Gumption

.  Pastor Krista Beth is leading a Sunday Evening Adult Study focusing on The Book of Esther.  We will meet Sundays January 11- February 15 from 5:30-6:30pm in the Upper Elementary Room.  We will discuss questions including:  Who was Esther?  What does her story have to do with our faith?  What can we learn from Esther to deepen our faith? How is Esther’s historical context similar to our context today? All are welcome!

Can you eat what we serve at Fellowship Time? Our Sunday morning hosts have graciously provided gluten free options for those unable to tolerate gluten.  In trying to be hospitalble to all, they wonder if there are other folks with dietary restrictions that prevent them from enjoying the food at fellowship time?  If you, or a family member, have need for a special diet please contact Jay Furr at jfurr@furrs.org.

We are the Deodorant Church!
JUMP (Joint Urban Ministries Project) depends on us to provide deodorant to share with members of the community in need.  (The Dollar Store is a great place to buy deodorant.)  There is a basket on the Outreach Table in the Gathering Space where donations of deodorant can be placed.  Thank you!
