Faith UMC Update March 28, 2018

Posted by on Mar 28, 2018 in Krista Beth | 0 comments

Dear Friends in Faith,

Blessed Holy Week to you.  May God be with us as we journey with Jesus from the Upper Room to the Cross, and on to the Empty Tomb.  Below you will find a prayer and our Holy Week schedule, along with other announcements and opportunities.

Your Friend in Faith,

Pastor Kristabeth

God of such unwavering love,
how do I “celebrate”
the passion and death of Jesus?
I often want to look the other way
and not watch,
not stay with Jesus in his suffering.
Give me the strength
to see his love with honesty and compassion
and to feel deeply
your own forgiveness and mercy for me.
Help me to understand
how to “celebrate” this week.
I want be able to bring
my weaknesses and imperfections with me
as I journey with Jesus this week,
so aware of his love.

Faith UMC Update March 22, 2018

Dear Friends in Faith,

The Season of Lent is drawing us closer and closer to the cross.  This Sunday we will recall Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem upon the back of a donkey, as people waved palm branches and shouted, “Hosanna!”  This path of Jesus ultimately leads to the Upper Room where he shared a meal with his disciples and on to the cross where he was crucified.  It is not an easy journey, but it is one that we must take to fully appreciate the joy of Easter and the gift of life.

Below you will find a prayer for Palm Sunday and our Holy Week schedule, along with other announcement and opportunities.  May you have a blessed Holy Week.

Your Friend in Faith,

Pastor Kristabeth

Thou who art the soul and heart of life, save us from fear—the fear of days and nights yet to be, the fear of the known and the unknown, the fear that builds high walls around our spirits and our lives, the fear that closes in and envelops us, the fear that nibbles at the edges of every satisfaction. Free us from fear of failure and success, of shame and pain, of death and fear of life as well. Open our eyes that we may see thy glory in humbleness and simplicity, commonness strewn generously across our path all our days. May we recognize thee riding upon a simple beast of burden, down the crooked streets of Jerusalem. May we not require the palms of victory and praise, the accolades and shouts of the multitude to see thy glory in gentleness, patience, loving kindness and, yes, pain and sometimes death. Thy way of peace—of faith, hope, and love—still is our path, our joy, our way. Amen.  ~David A. Johnson

Faith UMC Update March 15, 2018

Posted by on Mar 15, 2018 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update March 15, 2018

Dear Friends in Faith,

St. Patrick’s Day is just a couple of days away.  These days St. Patrick’s Day is more of a cultural festival than a religious holiday.  St. Patrick’s Day has become synonymous with corned beef and cabbage and green beer!  Yet there is a religious history to March 17.  It is observed as the Feast Day of St. Patrick who died on March 17 in the year 461.

Saint Patrick is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people.  Much legend has grown up around St. Patrick’s life. Perhaps the most well-known legend is that he explained the Trinity using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock.

St. Patrick’s Day also falls between the seasons of winter and spring.  As one well-known St. Patrick’s Day quote proclaims, “St. Patrick’s Day is an enchanted time – a day to begin transforming winter’s dreams into summer’s magic.” May it be so! Below you will find an Irish blessing. Scroll further down to learn what’s happening in your church and community.

Your Friend in Faith,

Pastor Kristabeth

May the road rise to meet you,
may the wind be ever at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Faith UMC Update March 8, 2018

Dear Friends in Faith,

Happy snowy day!  It’s not quite as snowy as we expected, but it reminds us that winter isn’t done with us yet!  The good thing, though, is that March snows don’t last very long.  Soon it will melt and we will enter Mud Season

Lent often corresponds with Mud Season, which seems appropriate.  Mud Season is messy and Lent can be messy, too.  As we pray and reflect on our lives we sometimes get stuck in those areas of our lives we wish we could change, or discover things we wish we could wipe off, like mud on our boots.  Below you will find a reflection that invites us not to dwell on our mistakes, but move forward with hope

Scroll further down to learn what’s happening in your Faith community.

Your Friend in Faith,

Pastor Kristabeth

So let us feast on simple pleasures,

and fast from all that gets our bodies and souls out of balance.

Let us feast on kindness, and fast from sarcasm.

Let us feast on compassion, and fast from holding grudges.

Let us feast on patience, and fast from anxiety.

Let us feast on peace, and fast from stirring up needless conflict.

Let us feast on acceptance, and fast from judgment.

Let us feast on joy, and fast from jealousy.

Let us feast on faith, and fast from fear.

Let us feast on creativity, and fast from all that deadens our souls.

Let us feast on social justice, and let us fast from negligence of the most vulnerable.

Let us feast on service to others, and fast from selfishness.

Let us feast on delight, and fast from despair.

Let us feast on bread and wine in spiritual communion, and fast from all that keeps us from communing deeply with each other and with God.

So that our lives might be sufficient, fulfilled, complete, whole, enough. Amen!

~ Rev. Jim Burklo

To All Knitters and Crochets’ – A Message from Bonnie Machia

Fred Sanford gave me Gail’s yarn, needles, and pattern books.  There is a lot of all! I am thinking it would be a nice memorial to Gail if the yarn is used to make hats, scarves and mittens for the 2018 mitten tree at church.  There is way too much for me to use it all, so I would like to start a knitting/crochet group. We can meet monthly or weekly, needles and yarn will be provided. I have tried several of the many patterns that are simple, so any level of knitting ability is welcome.  If you are interested, please be in contact: marilynmachia@comcast.net  (put “knitting” in the subject line) or call 802-863-3557.  Let me know time of day and days of the week that work for you.

Faith UMC Update March 2, 2018

Posted by on Mar 2, 2018 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update March 2, 2018

Dear Friends in Faith,

During this Season of Lent our worship series is focused on grace. So far we have explored Grace for our Brokenness and Grace for our Weakness. This Sunday we will consider Grace for Foolishness. While Lent is a season for considering our failings, it is also a season to give thanks for God’s grace. Without God’s grace we could never overcome our human frailty. Thankfully God’s grace is an undeserved gift, and not something that we have to earn.

Last Sunday I experienced God’s grace through you when you forgave me for a rather unwise hymn choice! During Lent we put away our “Alleluia” so it will be special on Easter morning. Yet, for last Sunday’s closing hymn I chose one with several “Alleluias” PER VERSE! We were able to laugh and change our hymn mid-course. While I was embarrassed at the time, I see it now as a wonderful lesson in the meaning of Lent – recognizing our failings and changing course. Thanks be to God!

Below you will find a prayer reflection by St. Augustine of Hippo. Scroll further down to learn what’s happening in your Faith community.

Your Friend in Faith,

Pastor Kristabeth

O Lord,
The house of my soul is narrow;
enlarge it that you may enter in.
It is ruinous, O repair it!
It displeases Your sight.
I confess it, I know.
But who shall cleanse it,
to whom shall I cry but to you?
Cleanse me from my secret faults, O Lord,
and spare Your servant from strange sins.

~ St. Augustine of Hippo (AD 354-430)

Faith UMC Update February 22, 2017

Posted by on Feb 22, 2018 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update February 22, 2017

Dear Friends in Faith,

Lent is living up to its name this year!  The meaning of Lent is Spring or lengthening of days.  Yesterday, with the temperatures in the high sixties, it certainly felt like Spring!  This morning, though, temperatures were back down in the 20s.  Winter isn’t over yet!

Life is sometimes like the wild fluctuations in the weather.  At one moment all is going well, but the next moment we face an unexpected challenge.  Like Lent, life is a journey of ups and downs.  Yet in life, like in Lent, we can take comfort that the Risen Christ meets us at the end of the journey.  Just like we know that Spring will come, knowing that Christ is with us can make the fluctuations easier to bear.

Below you will find a reflection on the Season of Lent.  Scroll further down to learn what’s happening in your Faith community.

Your Friend in Faith,

Pastor Kristabeth

Do you want to fast this Lent?

Fast from hurting words and say kind words;

Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude;

Fast from anger and be filled with patience;

Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope;

Fast from worries and have trust in God;

Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity;

Fast from pressures and be prayerful;

Fast from bitterness and fill your hearts with joy;

Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others;

Fast from grudges and be reconciled;

Fast from words and be silent so you can listen.

~ Words of Pope Francis shared by Tricia from the Conference Board of Laity

Dear Friends in Faith,

Lent is now upon us, the season of reflection and repentance. Often during Lent, Christians give up something (chocolate, coffee) as a way to acknowledge our dependence on God. When we crave the thing we gave up we are to think of God and thank God for all that God has given us. This is one form of a Lenten fast.

Another Lenten discipline involves taking something on – whether it is service in the community, writing letters to friends in need, or donating to a worthy cause. In this form of Lenten discipline, we give thanks to God for the ability to do that thing we have taken on for Lent.

Whatever you are doing to acknowledge it, I wish you a blessed Lent. May you be open to God’s working in your heart to bring about transformation. Below you will find a prayer for the beginning of Lent. Further down are announcements about church events and opportunities.

Your Friend in Faith,

Pastor Kristabeth

Remind us often Lord,

when we are feeling

proud,

arrogant,

beyond reproach,

pleased with ourselves,

self sufficient in our ways,

that for such as us

and better

and worse

you walked a road

that took you to a cruel cross,

and rose again to show us where

we might look for rescue

as from this lofty perch

we fall.

Faith UMC Update October 5, 2017

Posted by on Oct 5, 2017 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update October 5, 2017

Dear Friends in Faith,

This has been a week of tragedy and tears as we’ve reeled from the violence in Las Vegas.  The enormity of the tragedy is hard to comprehend – dozens killed, hundreds wounded.  We lift our prayers of lament and petition to God who weeps with us.  My faith was buoyed by stories of local United Methodist Churches that reached out with compassion and a helping hand.  You can read one such story here:  http://www.umc.org/news-and-media/after-mass-shooting-churchgoers-offer-help

Let us pray for the grieving, the wounded, the traumatized.  And let us work and pray for a world of peace and love, a world without violence and hate.  Below us a prayer we can lift in the face of the tragedy.  Further down you can read news of happenings in our church and local community.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Kristabeth

Lord God, we don’t know how to pray.
This immense tragendy feels overwhelming.
We can only imagine how the victims feel,
and we are so many miles away that we feel helpless.
Surround those directly involved with your loving presence.
Comfort the families of the dead and injured,
Sustain those waiting for word of those they love.
Protect, strengthen, and uphold
the rescuers and emergency personnel.
Help all of us to remember that your love
is bigger and stronger than despair and destruction.
Guide and strengthen us to reach out to those affected
in ways that will bring healing.
Give them and us a sense of your peace and hope.
In the name of Jesus, our friend and healer. Amen.

The Praying our Way Forward initiative launched on New Year’s Day 2017 with 75 weeks of focused prayer for The United Methodist Church. Each annual conference will take one week to have intentional prayer for the mission of The United Methodist Church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world and for the work of the Commission on a Way Forward. The Commission on a Way Forward was proposed by the Council of Bishops and approved by the 2016 General Conference to do a complete examination and possible revision the Book of Discipline paragraphs concerning human sexuality and explore maintaining and strengthening the unity of the church.  Prayers written by United Methodists in New England will be shared our website www. neumc.org. Dear Friends in Faith,

It may not feel like it, but tomorrow is the first day of autumn – the season of colorful leaves, warm apple cider and pumpkin everything!  (As I write this I am sitting at Barnes & Noble Café enjoying a pumpkin spice latte.) Even though the days have been warm, signs of autumn are everywhere.  And, noticing those signs is another opportunity to give thanks to God for the beauty of creation.  Below you will find a prayer celebrating the blessings of the season!  Scroll further to learn about events and opportunities in our faith community.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Kristabeth

So many shades of gold
Autumn
Another miracle we take for granted
Another expression of the artist’s vision
The blending of the autumn hues
with the setting sun
Warm
Comforting
Perfect
Thank you for autumn, Lord

Faith UMC Update September 14, 2017

Posted by on Sep 14, 2017 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update September 14, 2017

Dear Friends in Faith,

Over the past few weeks we’ve seen the devastation of two massive hurricanes.  We’ve also witnessed the heroism of neighbors and emergency workers, and the generosity of millions who’ve given money to help those who’ve lost so much.  Coming on the heels of the divisive and hateful events in Charlottesville, this witness of neighbors helping neighbors reminds us that the bonds of love are stronger than hate.  We have more in common than that which divides us.

Let us reject the rhetoric of hate and embrace love.  Let us see each other in all our humanity and reach toward each other in generosity.  If you scroll down you can find information about how to donate to hurricane relief efforts through UMCOR.  Also, below, I have included a prayer for a world impacted by natural disasters.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Kristabeth

This beautiful world
can be cruel,
destroying life
and livelihood
in an instant,
challenging our faith
in a God who cares.
This beautiful world
is yours, Lord,
created in love,
gifted by grace.
Help us
understand it ,
care for it ,
protect it,
and when disaster strikes
be there,
if not in person,
then in prayer.
