Faith UMC Update May 25, 2017

Posted by on May 25, 2017 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update May 25, 2017

Dear Friends in Faith,

Sometimes a rainy day is really nice!  When warm weather comes to Vermont we feel we must seize the moment.  There is so much yard work to do and so many outside projects to tackle, not to mention the hikes and rides and sports that beckon to us once the snow melts.  So every once in a while it is nice to have a rainy day to remind us to slow down and take a breath.  On days like this I like to sit at the window and just watch the rain fall while thinking about how the rain blesses God’s creation.  Today I invite you to do the same.

Below you will find a prayer celebrating God’s creation, down to the smallest element.  Further down are some announcements about our Faith community life together.

Your Friend in Faith,

Pastor Kristabeth

Every creature, every plant,
every rock and grain of sand
proclaims the glory of its Creator,
 worships through color, shape,
scent and form.
  A multi-sensory song of praise.
  Creator God, may we join
with the whole of your creation,
in praising you, our Creator,
 through the fragrance
and melody of our lives.
 Amen.

Dear Friends in Faith,

Like many families this time of year, this weekend Gary and I will be celebrating Ben’s graduation!  I will be taking vacation days Friday (tomorrow) through Monday to attend Ben’s graduation and spend time with family.  If you have a pastoral concern while I am gone, please contact our Lay Leader, Tricia.  May God bless all our graduates as they celebrate their accomplishments and plan for the future!

Below you will find a prayer for the graduates in your life.  If you don’t have a graduate in your family this year, share it with a friend or coworker who does!  Further down are some announcements about our Faith community life together.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Kristabeth

As your classes and grading are now complete, may you strive toward excellence in all you do.
As the speeches conclude, may your voices rise up to pronounce justice and peace in the world.
As the fanfares cease, may you sing of joy, even in the dark and lonely places.
As the applause quiets, may you celebrate and lift up those around you.
As you graduate, may your achievements grow and cause growth in your communities.
And may we all know of the overwhelming blessings of the One who created all things. Amen.

Faith UMC Update April 13

Posted by on Apr 13, 2017 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update April 13

Dear Friends in Faith,

Blessed Holy Week!  This week we remember Jesus betrayal, crucifixion and, ultimately, resurrection.  It is a week of ups and downs, highs and lows.  Because Jesus endured what he did during his life, we know that he understands our pain and sorrows.  And, because Jesus was raised, we know that the sorrows of this life are not the end of the story.  We’ve been promised the hope of eternal life, eternal joy.

Below you’ll find information about worship opportunities this week and other important announcements and events, including an adult study starting after Easter and a scholarship opportunity for our college students.  May your faith and life be enriched this week as we follow Jesus to the cross and discover the empty tomb.
Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Kristabeth

Jesus, Lamb of God,
when you walked this earth
you did not consider
heavenly equality,
though that was yours to choose,
but took the role of servant,
and in humility
and obedience
allowed the rough nails of our sin
to be hammered into your flesh
for the sake of our salvation.
And so it is
that we acknowledge you
as Lord of all,
to the glory of God the Father,
Son and Spirit, Three.

Sermon: “Gratitude, Joy, Hope, Love, Wonder, and Generosity”

Good Friday Service 7pm at Shelburne United Methodist Church

We are invited to join the Shelburne UMC for “We Remember Calvary” – a cantata by Joel Raney. This is a very moving setting of scripture and song. A Tenebrae observance of candles is also part of this service. The congregation will participate through the singing of familiar Lenten hymns woven into the story. (30 Church Street, Shelburne VT)

Easter Sunrise
Our Easter Sunrise Service will be at 6:00am at the Wheeler Homestead at 1100 Dorset St. (formerly the National Gardens).   Celebrate the Risen Christ with the rising of the sun ~ rain or shine!

Faith UMC Children’s Easter Egg Hunt Cancelled!

Here are some options for egg hunting in our area:

10am Colchester’s Bayside Park

10am Shelburne United Methodist Church

10am Essex Jct. at 75 Maple St. Park

Worship at The Pines – Easter Sunday at 11:30am – 5 Aspen Drive Dining Room
Every month our Pines Ministry Team leads worship with our friends at The Pines.  Our Lay Speakers bring the message and Communion is shared.  When the piano is available Shirley Murray leads us in song.  While held at The Pines, this service is open to all who wish to come and worship!

Thursday Afternoon Bible Study is on “hiatus” until further notice.  Please speak with Pastor Kristabeth if you have questions.

Adult Study exploring the book “Half Truths” by Adam Hamilton
Sundays, April 23-June 11 6pm in the Upper Elementary Room
Not everything we think is in the Bible actually is in the Bible.  “God helps those who help themselves.”  “Everything happens for a reason.”  “Love the sinner, hate the sin.”  These phrases (and others) sound Christian, and may capture some element of truth, but they miss the point in important ways.  Join us for this six week study as we compare some common “Christian” sayings with the wisdom found in Scripture. The book is available at Amazon – $12 paperback and $16 hardcover.

JUMP into Spring
April is our church’s month to collect food bags for the Joint Urban Ministry Project(JUMP).  Last year we generously supplied twenty five. Thanks go to Hanaford’s for donating the bags! Please see the display and the food list in the Gathering Space for more information.  Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Dear Friends in Faith,

It has been a tough few weeks for our church family, as we have lost several members and friends.  Last Saturday Jim Thomas died.  Tomorrow we will celebrate his life with a Funeral Service in the Sanctuary at 10am.  I may be late to my Barnes & Noble Hours tomorrow as I will be traveling with the family for the burial at 2pm.  Even as we say good bye to friends and companions in Christ, we know that death is not the end.  As St. Paul asks, “Where,O death, is your victory?  Where, O death, is your sting?”  The gift of Eternal Life is one of the may gifts that God gives to us out of God’s great love.

Below you will find a prayer of thanksgiving and awareness for God’s abundance.  Scroll down to find information about what is happening in your faith community!

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Kristabeth

Creator God, forgive our moments of ingratitude
the spiritual blindness that prevents us
from appreciating the wonder that is this world
the endless cycle of nature
of life and death and rebirth.
Forgive us for taking without giving
reaping without sowing.
Open our eyes to see
our lips to praise
and our hands to share
May our feet tread lightly on the path we tread
and our footsteps be worthy of following
for they lead to you.

Faith UMC Update February 10, 2015

Posted by on Feb 10, 2016 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update February 10, 2015

Dear Friends in Faith,

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Yesterday, at Bible Study, we talked about Lenten joy.  That may seem to be an oxymoron, since Lent is about repentance and self denial.  Yet, in acknowledging the truth about ourselves and giving up those things that separate us from God, we can find even greater joy. Personally I find myself spending way too much time in front of the TV, time I could be spending improving my life and the lives of others.  For Lent I am giving up TV so I can take on more creative and life-giving pursuits.  Wish me luck :)

Below you will find a prayer reflection for entering the season of Lent.  And remember to scroll down to read about what’s happening in your Faith community!

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Kristabeth

Lord, grant us simplicity of faith
And a generosity of service
That gives without counting cost
A life overflowing with Grace
Poured out from the One
Who gave everything
That we might show
The power of love
To a broken world
And share the truth
From a living Word
Lord, grant us simplicity of faith
And a yearning to share it.

~ Prayer Meditation on Matthew 6:1-21 from Faith and Worship

Dear Friends in Faith,

Last Sunday we had a great kick-off to our FLOCK year.  It was wonderful to see so many children (and adults) gathered, together again after a busy summer!  And the pot-luck food we shared was, as usual, fabulous!  This Sunday we continue the celebration as we present Bibles to our youngest ones, along with those in the 3rd and 8th grades.  If you, as an adult, don’t have a Bible please speak with me and I will make sure you get one.  If you have your Bible handy each week you can look up the Scripture lessons for Sunday’s worship, which I include in our Update ~ just scroll down!

Below you will find a prayer celebrating God’s presence with us.  Scroll further down to find out what is happening in your Faith community!

Faith UMC Update April 2

Dear Friends in Faith,

It has bee a long winter and a long Lent.  But we aren’t quite “there” yet.  Even as we have snow in the forecast, we have to travel with Jesus to the cross.  Spring will come.  Easter will come.  Yet in our rush to get “there” let’s not miss the lessons we can learn along the journey.

Below you will find a prayer for Holy Week.  Scroll further down to read about our upcoming Holy Week opportunities and other events.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Krista Beth

The Love of Jesus

This is love.
Not that you spoke words of comfort,
walked with the unclean and unloved,
shared wisdom, bread and wine,
brought healing into lives
and challenged the status quo.

This is love.
That you spoke the word of God,
walked a painful road to the Cross,
shared living water, bread of life,
brought Salvation to the world
and died for the sake of all.

This is love.
It is a seed
sown in the ground,
which germinates,
blossoms,
and spreads its sweet perfume.

Adult Bible Study 5 – 6 pm, Sundays, April 12 through May 17, Upper Elementary classroom

Is He still the same good God, regardless of our circumstances? In this 6-lesson study of the Book of Job, you will see how losing everything precious affected Job’s relationship with God, and how God responded to his questions.   We will spend six weeks examining these and other questions.   If you wish to participate, please let Jay Furr know so he can get you a copy of the study workbook in advance of the first session.  Jay is at 802-434-4601, jfurr@furrs.org, or simply ask him on Sunday.

Faith UMC Update March 19

Dear Friends in Faith,

The end of Lent is within sight.  Palm Sunday is just around the corner and soon it will be Easter morning.  Yet we still have time to prepare ~ heart and soul ~ to meet Jesus on the cross and at the empty tomb.  Christ came not just for some, but for all.  Christ expanded the boundaries so all could be sons and daughters of God.  That includes you and me.  Thanks be to God!

Below you will find a Lenten prayer.  Scroll down further to find information about upcoming events and activities in our church and wider community.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Krista Beth

Remind us often Lord,
when we are feeling
proud,
arrogant,
beyond reproach,
pleased with ourselves,
self sufficient in our ways,
that for such as us
and better
and worse
you walked a road
that took you to a cruel cross,
and rose again to show us where
we might look for rescue
as from this lofty perch
we fall. Amen.

Faith UMC Update March 11

Posted by on Mar 11, 2015 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update March 11

Dear Friends in Faith,

Sharing our faith is sometimes a difficult thing to do.  Recently there was a short video on Facebook about one pastor’s answer to the question, “What do you do?”  He answered, “I work for a global and intergalactic enterprise.”  That’s one way to put it!  It’s true that, in certain groups, it can be uncomfortable to say, “I am a Christian” or “I go to church.”  Yet Lent is a time to challenge ourselves with new insights and new practices.  Maybe this week, the fourth week of Lent, we could share our faith with someone ~ a friend, a colleague, a neighbor ~ and tell them about this global and intergalactic adventure that is faith.

Below you will find information about upcoming events and activities in our church and wider community.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Krista Beth

Lord, grant us simplicity of faith

and a generosity of service

that gives without counting cost.

A life overflowing with Grace

poured out from the One

who gave everything,
that we might show

the power of love

to a broken world,

and share the truth

from a living Word.

Lord, grant us simplicity of faith,

and a yearning to share it.  Amen.

Faith UMC Update March 5

Posted by on Mar 5, 2015 in Krista Beth | Comments Off on Faith UMC Update March 5

Dear Friends in Faith,

If you count the days between Ash Wednesday and Easter you will find that they add up to more than 40 days.  Yet we speak of Lent as being a 40 day journey.  This is because every Sunday is a “little Easter.”  The Sundays in Lent don’t count!  So if you gave up chocolate or soda or coffee for Lent you can enjoy them on Sundays and not break your Lenten fast :)

More importantly, though, every Sunday ~ even during the somber season of Lent ~ we celebrate God’s love for us through his son, Jesus.  Below you will find a prayer lifting up that love.  And please scroll down further to read about the upcoming activities of our Faith family and community.

Your Friend in Faith,
Pastor Krista Beth

Inscribed upon our heart,
the maker’s mark,
indelible,
the Word of God,
‘Love’
beautifully written,
heartfelt,
that all God’s people
might know
that we are precious,
children
of a heavenly Father
becoming family together,
and may eyes lift upward
as we listen together
to hear angels worship. Amen
